Life Expectancy

02/07/2020

This book is very fast paced and well written. However... the characters pretty much conform to every over Dean Koontz novel. Sigh.
The day Jimmy Tock, the main character, is born his grandfather dies but not before making 10 predictions. Notably he predicts that Jimmy will have '5 terrible bad days'.
That August night in Snow County Colorado (Not Orange County, CA, shock!) of 1974, the hospital there are two women giving birth with two men waiting and one doctor going between them.
Madelaine and Rudy will become the parents of Jimmy while a clown Konrad Beezo looses his wife in childbirth and kills the doctor and nurse before leaving with his newborn son. These invents will impact the rest of Jimmy Tock's life.
The five terrible days are:

  1. Sept 15th 1994 (age 20) He meets Punchinello who abducts him and Lorrie then he blows up the town library after shooting Jimmy who stabbed him.
  2. Jan 19th 1998 (age 23) His first daughter, Annie, is born and Konrad Beezo comes to exact revenge but only manages to burn their house down.
  3. Dec 23rd 2002 (age 28) Konrad returns to abduct Jimmy's son Andy. He shoots Lorrie then is subsequently killed by Jimmy.
  4. Nov 26th 2003 (age 29) Annie has cancer so Lorrie and Jimmy need to ask Punchinello (who is in prison) for help. He is a match and donates a kidney to Annie saving her life.
  5. Apr 16th 2005 (age 30) Jimmy gets a visit from the flying Vivacemente family, where the head of the family, Virgilio who offers him a lot of money for Andy.

Alright so what is happening. This is a fairly standard WTF Koontz plot.
Jimmy knows he is going to have five terrible days. On his first he goes to the library where he interrupts Punchinello holding the librarian hostage who he shoots after Jimmy walks in. Another person walks in after Jimmy, Lorrie Lynn Hicks. Punchinello handcuffs them together then proceeds to rob the town bank going under the city in the sewers with two clowns. As it turns out he is the son of Konrad Beezo. At the time he states he's there to exact revenge on the town for slandering his father's name and laying about the events that transpired in the hospital the night he and Jimmy were born. Long story short Punch kills the clowns and blows up the library killing eight people in total. In trying to escape Jimmy stabs Punch then Punch shoots Jimmy.
Punch goes to prison, though I think he was insane and should have gone to an asylum.
Jimmy and Lorrie end up married. AH! She is the most unrealistic 20-year-old!!! It's staggering. She's described as "realistic but romantic" and "a practical dreamer" which is ever love interest in a Dean Koontz novel. Dude! Meet some more people. Interact. Get some range!
That brings up to day two where Jimmy and Lorrie are having their first child Annie. Konrad is there to try and get revenge on them for taking Punchinello away from him. He burns their house down but that's it. He returns on Jimmy's third bad day to abduct Andy, Jimmy + Lorrie's son however he shoots Lorrie and is then killed by Jimmy.
Jimmy and Lorrie have three children at this point.

  1. Annie Jan 19th 1998
  2. Lucy Mar 21st 1999
  3. Andy Jul 14th 2000

Jimmy's fourth bad day is longer than a day -.- . His eldest daughter Annie has cancer and needs a kidney transplant. He learns that on the night he was born, in all the craziness with the mother of Punch dying and Konrad Beezo killing people a switch was done to save Jimmy. As it turns out the child Madelaine and Ruby Tock had died that night. Konrad's young areobactic wife had twin boys: Punchinello and Jimmy. Punch was taken by Konrad who was none-the-wiser and the surviving nurse gave Jimmy to the Tock's without telling them their own child died. O.O
So long story short Punch ends up being a match and gives Annie a kidney.
He is a standard Koontz 'bad guy' in that he is a solipsist. This is seen most prominently in One Door Away from Heaven. Solipsism is believing you are the only thing that is real and the world, people, ect, around you has all been created in your mind.
There is a quote here that I enjoy: "Despair is the abandonment of hope. Desperation is energized despair, vigorous in action, utterly reckless."
Then we get our truly shocking Koontz reveal when Jimmy and Lorrie go to see Virgilio Vivacemente, the father of Konrad Beezo's wife, therefore grandfather of Punch & Jimmy. He is a famous acrobat along with the Vivacemente family. He, as it turns out, isn't their grandfather. YES! The Kootnz reveal does have to do with incest, what else? He raped his own daughter and so he is at once their father and grandfather. Now, he wants to buy Andy, Jimmy's son and train him to be an acrobat. Of course Jimmy and Lorrie decline a fight ensue but they make it out.
The story ends on February 2007, Jimmy and Lorrie welcome their fourth child Rowena. A woman down the hall lays dying, before she goes she predicted "five glorious days." And we are left with our overly happy ending. #KoontzStyle
